As a maker/designer I have always been attracted to salvage and re-using materials that may have outlived their original purpose in producing something new.

Rag rug-making has a long history as a domestic craft carried out in many homes where nothing went to waste and worn out or discarded materials given new life and character as a rug or mat. The simple processes, tools and ready availability of materials has been a large part of wide appeal of this craft over the years and continues to fascinate many people.

In my own rendition of this craft, I have indulged tendencies of curiosity, consuming and collecting, visiting jumble sales and charity shops and enjoying the unexpected or unpredictable results and effects, often after hours of quiet methodical labour. Similarly limitations and constraints provide a challenge, be it working randomly with limited batches of colour, or working to a more graphic design that will also suit the qualities of the medium.
